What the WW2 secret agent who rescued my grandpa can teach us about protecting democracy:

Office of Strategic Services operative Peter Ortiz rescued a downed American pilot named 2nd Lt. Murray Simon. Simon's granddaughter, Katie Sanders, has published a book on Ortiz titled “Ortiz’s War: he Allies’ Secret Weapon Against the Nazis in France.”

I can hear the bubbles popping. The U.S. has lost the AI race.
The world and the U.S. are watching the development of AI tools with great concern and an almost obsessive fixation. Yet the prevailing perspective is a Western-centric, utterly narrow view of the matter. As a result—much like in many other

Hey followers! I’m currently part-time contracting at the wonderful convocation.design/ where I get to work on internet freedom and privacy/security projects but I’m also looking for other projects to fill me days that I’m not working for Convocation.

If y’all have projects where you need a designer who has worked on complex UI systems, typically for skill-proficient people, and want more usable and accessible to non-proficient users then I’m your designer/researcher!

Check out more of my work on my updated website erioldoesdesign.github.io/

I’ve worked primarily on privacy, security, civic tech, open science, open source software tools and the digital rights space for over 8 years and I’ve worked on commercial/proprietary tech for another 6 years, totally over 15 years of designing for people across technology. I’m a detailed user researcher and typically employ a ‘just enough’ research approach to make meaningful changes to user bases of tools.

Does something like AI even exist?

The AI debate has become overheated and is taking on ridiculous tones. As is always the case with such debates, there are only black-and-white perspectives—and all within a specific framework that narrows the scope and prevents meaningful thinking on the subject. It seems silly.

If you listen closely to Liang Wenfeng, the founder of , you’ll hear that Liang sees himself as a 100% part of the international and, with Deepseek, simply wants to continue what was already started with . It’s about the democratization of . According to his philosophy, AIs are neither a new tool nor a product that can or should be sold, but rather naturally emerging synergies that arise from connecting the knowledge of the people who use the internet.

So the problem isn’t this interconnection in and of itself, but—once again—the privatization of the commons by and from Valley or wherever. It makes a lot of sense to use this, and it makes a lot of sense to oppose the commodification of this knowledge. has given back to the community what wanted to steal! Thank you for that.

I said Mumble, hands down. But then I realized I hadn't looked at the project for a while, nor its smartphone apps (and forks thereof).

                  Anyone care to comment? 🤔

In other words Ladybird is no longer a free and open source software project. It is, in an important sense, closed now.

"Proprietary" means having owner(s). If the maintainers are the only ones allowed to introduce changes, they are establishing an ownership relationship over the codebase. I.e., it's a proprietary project, and that is the sense in which it's closed.

This is the destiny of most projects that go AI, in my opinion.

What appears as critique – yearning for smaller, weirder, more human spaces – often functions as brand repair. Netstalgia becomes a strategy: it restores trust without redistributing power, softens anger without changing infrastructures and reframes structural problems as matters of vibe, design or community feeling.
"Am I working on change, or am I working on brand repair?" is an important question to ask oneself regularly, it seems to me. It's especially relevant for the tech sector, open source, and computer science.

A subtoot: corporations, and corporate(-like) behavior, are political. Anyone claiming that corporate-like work is apolitical--work that includes business-friendly software development whether it occurs within the walls of a corporate entity or not--is either naive or deliberately obfuscating reality.

"Politics" isn't only about institutions. It's about organizing large numbers of people to do something they wouldn't otherwise do. Corporations organize large numbers of people to do things they probably wouldn't do if they weren't paid and/or didn't need the money to live. 10,000 people wouldn't spontaneously get together and spend the best hours of their days for months building a commercial jet airliner if there weren't corporate structures in place and a society that keeps them close enough to deprivation that they will do this in exchange for money.
