It would be interesting if privacy respecting websites started detecting if a user isn't using an ad blocker, to then show the user a popup asking them to install one.

Yesterday we were talking with Viktor on Discord. I was thinking the bottleneck in crawling is bandwidth. Viktor said something else:

The bottleneck is not BW, not most of the time. But the problem's that a) the crawler is polite. So I don't send so many requests to the same host concurrently. For instance, so many websites on wordpress.com, geocities, github.io and similar.

And b) Too many open connections will drive the network switch mad and it'll be problematic.

Since yesterday, I'm using to download websites for offline usage and later index them using . By default, wget is a polite crawler. I am fetching about ~10 websites concurrently. And the average BW usage is just 1MB/s. Fetching some websites is not done since yesterday till now...

OK now what? Any reasonable legal regime dictates that an enterprise built on a theft should not be permitted to retain the fruits of that theft. Have we really entered a fully lawless era in the world of business?
Executives working on AI at Microsoft and OpenAI admitted what its critics have been saying all along: Large language models are predatory pieces of technology that have been built on what a Microsoft executive called “an astonishing theft of unprecedented proportions,” and the “largest theft of labor in human history.” An internal Microsoft document said generative AI products have created a “doom loop” that is killing “the entire web.”

🥳 Just released: Auto Encrypt¹ version 6.2.1

                              This isn’t what I ordered!

                              • An order/CSR identifier mismatch now fails fast and loud with an `Order.identifiersMismatchError`

If the ACME server offers to provision a different set of identifiers than the one that we requested, we now fail immediately. Previously, we were logging a warning and validating all remaining authorisations, only to fail at order finalisation with a `badCSR` error (RFC 8555 § 7.4).

                              Full change log: codeberg.org/small-tech/auto-e

                              Enjoy! 💕

If at first you don’t succeed…

                                • Transient ACME server failures are now retried up to four times and obey the Retry-After header, falling back to exponential back-off if one isn’t provided.
                                • Vastly improved error handling.
                                • Some bug fixes.

Basically, Auto Encrypt now does it’s very best to provision you that certificate even when things go wrong.

I should at some point get around to writing the specifications for the alternative web document markup language I've had in my head forever.

HTML isn't bad, but it is definitely constrained by its position as the default markup language for the whole modern web. They need to cater to everyone, from super fancy corporate websites, massive web applications, social media, video sites, encyclopedias, personal homepages, art projects, hobbyists, to professional webdev engineers ...

I really want something purpose-built for a more semantic, personal hypertext web aimed at enthusiasts.

Perhaps it wouldn't be as versatile as HTML, but it doesn't need to fit all use cases of every possible target audience or be viable for businesses.

I am thinking things like …

                                                • Styling should be handled exclusively by the browser based on semantic elements and application-level user preferences (perhaps minimal style recommendations/hints at best).
                                                • Differentiating types of hyperlinks; internal navigation links, important main links, optional context/rabbithole links etc.
                                                • More granular and specific semantic elements, like the uncoupling of times and dates, splitting address/contact elements into specific fields like e-mail and name, quotations with attributions, definitions etc.
                                                • Integration of other semantic data projects such as MusicBrainz, Wikidata or Wikipedia (holy link rot, but we'll see).
                                                • More obligatory metadata like authorship, tags, publishing/modification date etc.
                                                • Integration of non-search engine discoverability features like webrings, directly on a site level
                                                • Easier cross-document reusable elements, i. e. integrating the same header or footer on each site
                                                • Extensive entity-oriented data support with URIs, e. g. in-line fetching of things like names, pronouns or contact data from a central 'person' entity URL to automatically propagate things like name changes through the web.

                                                … and so on.

I could even experiment with the markup tech itself; it doesn't need to be XML after all. It could even be something like a stand-off annotation document allowing the division of content writing from mark-up. Or something with a similarly simple syntax as Markdown, but with semantic instead of styling information.

And then comes the arduous task of implementing a parser. I'm so excited.

It is remarkable to me that you cannot directly copy-paste the text of an error message out of the Chrome web console. The advice I find about copying the "object" to a global variable and then stringifying, or variants of this, are insane. The web runs on text. The console is displaying text on my screen, which means the "object" was already converted to text. This is gratuitous bureaucracy. I have to fill out the appropriate form to access text I can see with eyes.

Maybe I'll OCR it just to be like that?

Edit: Yes, I'm aware that you can copy some of the text. However, no matter what I do not all the text comes along. Either way, adding right-click->Copy ought to be trivial.

(This is not a request for advice; nor a pinboard for complaints about Google, Chrome, the web, or me; nor a place to opine about why such things might happen in complex pieces of software).

Would you be kind enough to run the following command in Terminal in your largest projects and let me know what number your get (along with a short description of the project):

I am getting to know the platform, and I like it (but don't know much about alternatives, being a WordPress escapee). I have it set up as a on one domain. It takes around 5 minutes to post a blog entry, not including the time taken to write the entry. I don't use github, which seems to place me firmly in the minority of Hugo users. I also don't host this from my local machine; I have it on Opalstack (my no-nonsense webhost). My workflow right now is this:

                                                                                          1. Navigate into my local wwww/content directory

                                                                                          4. Add any photos I might want to go with the entry, meaning resize & rename them, put them in the /images directory, and type the link in the blog entry
                                                                                          5. Preview [optional, probably not necessary without images]: hugo server -D then over to my browser at localhost:1313 to make sure the post looks OK. Adjust, repeat as necessary
                                                                                          6. Fire up Filezilla
                                                                                          7. Enable the site (the presets for logging in and loading local & remote directories)

                                                                                          9. Go see if it looks OK

Step 8 (second-to-last) should theoretically be much faster with rsync but I'm getting error messages from Opalstack's server with that. I think I need their help, so maybe just assume step 8 could be simplified to an rsync command.

Are there Linux packages/functions that simplify some of this? Should I just ditch Hugo and use something simpler if I'm only blogging? Is this pretty much what the future looks like for me?

Vivaldi is a much more useful experience on iOS than the iOS lobotomized Firefox in the Apple app store.

I got rid of my iPad for similar reasons.

I still use Waterfox on Android because I can run uBlock and other extensions.

The problem is compounded by the fact that I'm very likely zoomed so far into the desktop that I don't even see the text I thought I'd selected. Naturally I begin wondering whether I made a mistake, whether I selected more text than I intended, whether I didn't hit Ctrl-C enthusiastically enough for it to register, etc etc etc. What ought to be a simple and routine command turns into a mystery to solve. To me this feels like a hallmark of poor design.

It's weird and people should stop being weird about technology like this.

Kagi started as an AI company that wanted to slurp up the internet to provide a question "answering" service not unlike what Google is proposing to replace web search with. Perhaps they've toned this rhetoric down a bit on their blog recently but there's no evidence I'm aware of that the business has changed mission. All of this is still available on Kagi's own blog---including the fact that they used to be kagi.ai---yet somehow it's controversial to point it out. If you're looking for a web search engine that isn't likely to turn into a slop extruder, Kagi is probably not going to be the one. Try @Mojeek@mastodon.social or Marginalia. This is not true, but folks keep claiming it or suggesting it anyway.

Here's a post from an official Firefox Mastodon account suggesting such a master kill switch does not exist yet, but will be added in a future release:

It's bad they're stuffing AI into a perfectly good web browser for no apparent reason other than vibes or desperation. It's very bad if it's on by default; their dissembling post about it aside, opt-in has a reasonably clear meaning here: if there's a kill switch, then that kill switch should be off by default. But at least there will be a kill switch.

In any case, please stop responding to my post saying there's a master kill switch for Firefox's AI slop features. From the horse's mouth, and from user experience, there is not yet.

Furthermore, when there is a master kill switch, we don't know whether flipping it will maintain previous state of all the features it controls. In other words it's possible they'll have the master kill switch turn on all AI features when the switch is flipped to "on" or "true", rather than leaving them in whatever state you'd set them to previously. Perhaps you decide to turn the kill switch on because there are a handful of features you're comfortable with and you want to try them; will doing so mean that now all the AI features are on? We won't know till it's released and people try this. So, in the meantime, it's still good practice to keep an eye on all these configuration options if you want the AI off.

In fact I think "security" is really about control, and nowadays when I encounter a security challenge I think of it in terms of who is trying to control my behavior and to what ends. I think it's clear by now that many internet "security" controls, at least those deployed by large tech companies, are not good faith efforts to protect users; that's a secondary concern.

Large entities like CloudFlare choke off more and more avenues of access in the name of "security", enforcing digital checkpoints without any accountability to anyone.

Nowadays I feel like I'm being hit with captchas all day every day, where before it was relatively rare. It is especially noticeable on sites I visit frequently, have accounts with, and presumably have cookies for.
