Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to what people ask most often before signing up.

Everything is run and stored on Hetzner, a cloud provider from Germany. Hence, all data is protected by the German data protection law and the GDPR. Backups are replicated across multiple (European) cloud providers.

We would rather not rate-limit ordinary use, but crawlers and automated abuse make some protections necessary. At the edge, HAProxy tracks request rates per source and returns HTTP 429 responses for abusive web traffic. Aggressive crawlers are filtered before they can affect normal people using the platform, and separate storage and artifact quotas protect shared capacity. The HAProxy configuration and resource quotas are public. Normal browsing, cloning, pushing and CI use should not hit these protections.

CodeFloe was founded in 2025 and is operated by devXY GmbH together with independent contributors. The small team is building an alternative to proprietary software forges. Everyone responsible, and what they work on, is visible in the repositories of the CodeFloe organization.

CodeFloe operates a Discourse-based discussion forum where all platform-related discussions are taking place. We currently do not offer individual support, and there is no guarantee that a responsible person will respond to your issue. We respond when we can.

Yes. Forgejo, the underlying forge software, includes a built-in migration tool that imports repositories from GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and other Git platforms while preserving history, issues and pull requests. To migrate an entire organization, group, user or selected set of repositories in one run, use our batch migration tool.

We use AI tools ourselves and welcome their use on CodeFloe. We do not train models on code or other data stored here, and we do not sell or provide that data to anyone who would. Automated AI crawlers are subject to the same protections as other bots so they cannot degrade the platform for people using it.

Yes, we welcome individuals, non-profits, and for-profit companies.

CodeFloe aims to keep costs low, or zero, for most users, but domains, databases, storage, bandwidth, compute and backups all cost money. Donations help cover those costs and keep the platform sustainable. Any priced tier we add will cover the hardware cost of users who need more storage or CI capacity, and nothing else. Costs, usage and donation income are published in our analytics repository, and donations are split transparently between the people maintaining and developing the platform.
