River gull for day 5. I saw this gull at so-called Kingston Point Beach during the local Running Down the Walls this year*, when I took a moment to walk down to the beach from the pavilion where we were hanging out, sheltered from the rain.
Gulls at the river beach also inspired art for a flyer for the event. I had seen them on a cold December day at beach a couple of years ago. I won’t go so far as to say the birds on the flyer are gulls – they’re more abstract than that – but when it was time to sketch out some flyer art, those birds at the river, flying free, were on my mind.

Canada goose for day 6. I encountered this goose the first spring after the winter in which I moved to the so-called Hudson Valley a few years ago. The intensity of winter and then the equal intensity of the spring was deeply disconcerting — it’s very different from the Mediterranean climate of the Bay Area, where my heart and soul (and at least some of the the pattern-recognition parts of my mind) still resided.*
This encounter was a bit downriver from where I live now, at a river park where there are always many Canada geese in the warmer months.
I don’t see as many Canada geese up here, still on the so-called Hudson River — they must be here somewhere, but not in the places I tend to go.
It’s mostly gulls and ducks that I notice on the river now, and bald eagles overhead, and swans in the marsh.
* My soul will always belong to the Pacific; though, as it turns out, there is part of it that can belong to the river, as well.

"AI" is a failed technology, in the sense that it's neither fit for purpose, nor a likely path to its stated end goal of "AGI", but a lot of people's profits currently depend on pretending it's not. I am curious to see how long the hype will last once the Nvidia ouroboros ends and money stops being pumped into marketing.

The British don't speak German like that.
Translation isn't just about precision. It's also about audience.
A British character in a German translation often doesn't sound British. They sound like a German person's idea of a British person. The same goes for Americans.
German audiences have cultural expectations about how British and American people speak. They expect certain rhythms, certain jokes, certain kinds of politeness, a particular flavour of sarcasm. And translating dialogue means navigating those expectations without turning the characters into cultural caricatures.
You can't solve this by sprinkling well, mate and bloody hell into German sentences and calling it a day. That's not localisation. That's a fancy dress party.
You have to understand what the dialogue does. How a British person uses understatement. How an American expresses enthusiasm. How politeness, humour, irritation and intimacy work differently across cultures. And then you have to find a way to make those things work for your audience without losing the character in translation.
Sometimes precision means preserving the unfamiliar. Sometimes it means adapting the expression so the audience experiences the same effect. Knowing which is which requires judgement, cultural knowledge and a rather good ear.
AI can produce German words that look perfectly plausible. But plausible isn't the same as authentic, and fluent isn't the same as culturally convincing.
A translation doesn't just carry words from one language to another. It carries people across cultural borders.
And people are considerably more complicated than dictionaries.

These days the common assumption seems to be that it's fine to spread the plague. After all, if people didn't want to get infected, they would have stayed at home!
So you have to put all these "please don't spread the plague" signs all over the place. Not just in one prominent place, because plague bearers won't bother checking.
And then they'll come anyway and say:
• "Oh, but I thought I'm only forbidden from *admitting* to having the plague."
• "But I have double checked all my spit, and I'm sure it's not contagious."
• "Oh, sorry, let me just disinfect my mouth and spit again."
• "Go on, try to figure out which of my spit carries the plague, and which doesn't."
• "I'm only using the plague to learn, I'm sure it's not contagious."
• "Who cares? The plague is the future!"

"
If a week is a long time in politics, then it's an eternity in the universe of artificial intelligence.
All the way back in June, Andrew Charlton, the Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy, gave a speech on the government's commitment to AI.
Charlton is an unabashed advocate of Australia embracing AI and developing what he calls "world-class Australian AI industry".
Charlton explained that this aspiration would not succeed without one non-negotiable ingredient: trust in the technology. The Australian people would need to trust that the government could protect them from the risks of AI and that they would share in the benefits of AI.
He finished his speech in observing that "... trust is not the price of an AI industry. Trust is the foundation of one."
Charlton's speech hasn't aged well. On September 18, CNN reported that an intelligence report provided to the US military and generated with the help of a chatbot "almost started a war", by falsely asserting that a Chinese ship in the Middle East was transporting nuclear material to aid Iran.
According to the report, shortly before the US military prepared to intercept the vessel, the errors in the report were identified and the plan was abandoned.
Nevertheless, Charlton highlighted an essential truth. Australians don't trust AI; they fear it. A global study conducted in 2025 by Melbourne Business School and KPMG surveyed 48,000 people about their attitudes towards AI.
More than half surveyed don't trust the technology. Australians' distrust outperformed the rest of the world: 70 per cent of Australians believe that the risks of AI outweigh its benefits.
The survey was conducted before AI companies started issuing apocalyptic warnings about their technology while their agents went rogue. There is no trust and the AI industry is incapable of restoring it.
Australians are right. Advanced AI has evolved into a dangerous, rogue technology. As Anthropic prepares to go public in the US, its initial public offering prospectus warns investors that its products may pose "catastrophic or existential risks to humanity".
If that public disclosure has been approved by the company lawyers, imagine what is being said behind closed doors.
Open AI has delayed the release of its latest model because it's uncontrollable and dangerous. As proof of concept, reports have emerged that both Anthropic and Open AI "are investigating tens of thousands of incidents" involving rogue agents interfering with government websites and other agencies.
The full scale of this misconduct is not yet known. It's likely that if human beings engaged in this behaviour, they would be arrested and charged with criminal offences.
Australian politicians have issued repeated expressions of concern, demands for company executives to front inquiries, to take responsibility and have established a new task force led by government bodies.
The Department of Home Affairs has issued an urgent directive to all government departments to conduct a stocktake of all ageing technology and "implement a target to reduce legacy technology supported by a risk management plan".
While many bureaucrats will be kept occupied stocktaking, upgrading technology and drafting risk management plans, nothing much will be achieved.
The federal government needs to address the situation radically differently and do three things quickly.
The key to keeping Australians safe is staring the federal government in the face: AI companies, like other companies, need to pay for the harm that they cause.
In other words, our laws need to allow anyone harmed by an AI company's negligence-whether governments, businesses, other organisations, individuals and community organisations - to sue for compensation.
The companies need to understand that unleashing rogue agents will hit their bottom line. Once our laws change, they will be motivated to devote significant resources to making their products safe because the consequences of not doing so will be dire for them.
If they have to pick up the tab each time an agent goes rogue, they will use their ingenuity to ensure that their agents stop going rogue.
In coming weeks, the federal government will introduce a duty of care for social media companies but will need to do so separately for the AI industry.
Duty-of-care schemes will only work if the companies clearly understand that they will be liable to compensate all those that they harm by their negligence.
To date, the greatest advance in online safety to date resulted from law suits brought against Meta, which have recently settled. As well as agreeing to pay $24 billion in compensation, Meta has radically changed its products to make them safer.
Introducing a broad and flexible duty of care into Australian law is likely to be far more effective than a thousand risk management reports, codes of conduct or government taskforces.
The European Union's AI Act has failed to make an impact because the technology continues to evolve in ways that were not foreseen when its rigid, technocratic rules were introduced in 2024. Unlike highly prescriptive regulation, a broad duty of care to prevent foreseeable harm will be flexible enough to address harms which are yet to emerge.
While the federal government addresses the fundamental lack of safety and trust, it needs to slow down and resist what backbencher Ed Husic describes as the "shock-and-awe lobbying approach by US tech, designed to swamp government decision making".
There is a clear disconnect between the rapid pace with which AI is being deployed in Australia and the distrust that the community has in it.
Slowing down will require the federal government to cure itself of that emerging global epidemic: AI Fear Of Missing Out Syndrome ("AIFOMOS").
Tim Ayres, Minister for Industry and Innovation, appeared to be exhibiting symptoms of the ailment when he recently stated that: "The biggest risk from AI may not be adopting it. The biggest risk may be being left behind."
No minister, the biggest risk from AI is failing to ensure that it is safe.
In more serious cases, AIFOMOS sufferers invoke a strange language which blends both econobabble and technobabble. They chant incomprehensible phrases to a perplexed public like "value chain", "unlocking second and third round benefits", "leveraging our home grown assets" and "capturing value across the AI stack".
While Anthropic and Open AI are seeking to capitalise on inculcating a false sense of urgency in their dealings with governments all over the world, the technology will continue to develop for many years.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has to use this opportunity to confront the other endemic trust problem; declining trust in government and democratic institutions.
Trust in government has declined in Australia and elsewhere because of the perception that politicians prioritise the interests of big business over the public.
He needs to send an unambiguous message to the community that he has their back and that AI companies, like social media companies, will not be allowed to cause them harm without consequences.
He needs to explain that these companies have become dangerous and harmful by ruthlessly extracting value from the community while saddling governments and taxpayers with the enormous cost of their ever-growing array of harms.
The prime minister has made no secret of his desire to be recognised as the pre-eminent global leader in regulating Big Tech.
His government's efforts to date, including the social media age ban, have had mixed results but nevertheless garnered strong approval. Now he needs to double down by legislating user-friendly compensation regimes for those who suffer harm, demonstrate to the community that they work and export them to the rest of the world.

In my private projects and in #Gentoo, I have a strict #NoAI policy. Any LLM-assisted contributions are closed immediately and considered tainted. Use for messaging, bug reporting, etc. also gets you a warning and a request to write yourself. And I dare say I have a heavy ban finger on this; you get one warning only. Well, unless it's clearly an automated submission, in which case you get an immediate ban.
In my dayjob and non-Gentoo work, I also follow a strict policy for my own work. I don't use any of these tools. However, I can't really stop others from doing so, even though I cringe whenever I see someone needing to use an overengineered statistical model to make a trivial change. I can't really reject bug reports, reviews, etc.
The really hard part of it is that I'm starting to have doubts. I truly hate slop in all forms, and what these tools have done to the Internet in general, and to #FreeSoftware in particular. However, I've also gotten some good reports. Like, the kind of tricky logic issues in the specification I am developing that I would have never figured out myself, and that may have never came up during the review otherwise. In other words, someone running an LLM on the specification triggered real bugs that would likely slipped through and required a post-approval specification change when someone noticed that we've introduced incompatible constraints in two different parts of the specification, that would eventually be hit in real use.
All the ethical problems are still there. All the harm is still there. However, I can't really claim that these tools vomit pure useless slop anymore. I feel that it's really time for me to retire.
I’ve been considering borrowing the practice of someone at work and sending out a weekly update email. In the spirit of #NoAI I was just musing that I could invite folks to write me a prompt (as if I was a LLM?). And really, all this prompt engineering is just asking good questions (but I digress). For example:
“Tell us what the Dean has been doing in the last week and please avoid all analogies, interesting stories, and the use of any gendered language”, or, “What was the most exciting meeting you attended in the last week? What was the most boring and useless?”, or, “When can we hope you’ll retire?”
How would you prompt your boss? (Keep it #spicy this isn’t fucking #linkedin )
This fuckin "I made this myself with No A.I .. but then after release I used LLMs and AI to bug fix and create new features" is FUcKING EXHAUSTING Y'ALL.
Stop tying to weasel - word your way out of criticism. Have some GODDAM BALLS FFS !
Open Source is about a lot of things. For one of many, it's about human interaction. At least, for me, it is. If we allow AI usage in Open Source projects, the human interaction is gone.

Those people, often students, approach people at parties, events, and start talking about "AI safety". The best defense is letting them know that you are well aware of "effective altruists", and what a cult they are.
Read here what a dangerous cult they are, from a former member: https://www.realtimetechpocalypse.com/p/effective-altruism-is-a-dangerous
Here are the faces and names of "effective altruists" high up the hierarchy in Germany: https://effektiveraltruismus.de/en/team-en/
One of them tried to sell me their story 10 days ago. He is completely fried: https://ea.greaterwrong.com/users/birk-kaellberg?sort=old (this is not SF to them, they truly believe those things)
He organizes "AI safety" talks in his garden in Heidelberg and the listeners get a free dinner. He says their money comes from "philanthropists".
At first I thought he was just someone who bought into the EA talks about "AI safety", so I warned him against EA, even told him "I think your heart is in the right place" but then it turned out he knew full well what cult he was in, so then I was rude and made fun of their prophet Yudkowsky and Sam Bankman Fried, and he ended up giggling nervously and self-soothing by caressing his fingers. Then he switched to chatting up students.
Honestly, I haven't been so creeped out by a cult since Opus Dei! They have money and can pull in uninformed people. Spread the word! Make it embarrassing to engage with EA!

Gentoo supports a whole bunch of architectures that probably every other distribution dumped so far. Gentoo has a strong upstream cooperation policy. However, these days I'm afraid to file issues, because just too often they just trigger more slop. I miss the "good" old days where the worst you could expect is some toxic asshole.
The state of #FreeSoftware is truly depressing. There is little joy in distribution work these days. You're overwhelmed with shit, burned out and end up doing a shitty job. And it's bad for your health.
@AeonCypher whilst some of my essential services use gen-ai bots now in lieu of humans, for their first-tier customer support, hence i can't avoid them despite my fierce objection, for everything else that i can directly control, i simply refuse entirely to use slopbottery. by that i mean i will disable all slopbottery in fav apps if i have the option, otherwise replace such apps if i can't disable the slop. i certainly will never use any overt gen-ai service, ugh vomit. sadly though, these days #linux itself seems to be rapidly overrun with slopbottery, which breaks my heart, so i am actively though so far not terribly successfully assessing possible escape avenues, eg a #BSD, or even #Haiku

So, based on all the replies here, on lobste.rs, and in anti-ai spaces, I've compiled an issue on my forgejo to start parsing what I want to try for myself as well as what I might offer as a service down the line. It mostly just categorizes links to all the things and adds super brief comments selected from here and lobste.rs so I can take everything into consideration on various categories of things to offer, in addition to just fun treats to try myself (like CLI/TUIs).

One of the things AI translation is spectacularly bad at is character voice.
A character in a novel does not merely say things. They have habits. Favourite turns of phrase. Odd little colloquialisms. A particular rhythm. Maybe they are dry, breathless, pompous, tender, sarcastic, provincial, flamboyant, or gloriously weird.
AI tends to turn all of that into statistically plausible soup.
A human translator can look at a character and think: No. This is how this person talks.
And then recreate that voice in another language without losing what made it theirs in the first place.
That is what translation is supposed to do: change the language while keeping the person.
This is one of the reasons I am still fighting for human translation, especially for literature, science, and all the wonderfully strange things that deserve better than AI slop.
And yes, I am still trying to keep my little human translation business afloat. 🌱
If you would like to help me keep doing this work, my fundraiser is here:

#EastportME Council unanimously adopts moratorium on #DeepGreen #UnderwaterDatacenter proposal
By Melissa S. Razdrih, August 13, 2026
EASTPORT — "The City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to enact a 180‑day moratorium that halts all progress on a proposed underwater artificial intelligence data center planned for waters off Eastport.
"Councilors said the move gives them time to consult with the Eastport Planning Board on the zoning impacts of two citizen-initiated ordinances designed to prevent data center projects in the city by amending the city’s Zoning and Shoreland Zoning ordinances.
"At the heart of the controversy is a project proposed by #LouisWolfson, a #LuxuryRealEstateDeveloper from Needham, Massachusetts, and the managing member of #DeepGreenHoldingsLLC.
"The company formed in Delaware one month before applying for Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, or #FERC, preliminary permits to build tidal‑powered, underwater artificial intelligence data centers for both #DeepGreenWesternPassageSPV in #Maine and a second project in the #UpperCookInlet in #Alaska.
"The Alaska proposal has also faced #resistance from the local community.
"In February, DeepGreen filed a 48‑month preliminary permit application with FERC to begin engineering and environmental tests in Maine, a required first step toward developing an underwater #AIDatacenter in the #BayOfFundy .
"The application drew an almost immediate response from residents and #Passamaquoddy tribal officials, who strongly oppose the development. Among the most vocal opponents is the #EastportCoalitionForHealthyOceans, or #ECHO, which submitted two citizen petitions for ordinances intended to prevent the project and protect what the group describes as 'the character of the city.'
"FERC found multiple deficiencies in DeepGreen’s application, including failure to identify all Tribes affected by the project, failure to specify all physical dimensions and configurations required by statute, inclusion of maps that extended beyond the required project boundaries, and a lack of detailed technical explanation for a 400‑acre 'operational envelope' despite a much smaller active infrastructure footprint.
"In its response to FERC, DeepGreen supplied the requested names and contact information for Tribal leaders. The company also provided an updated map and revised technical specifications showing a significantly smaller proposal, reducing the original 400‑acre operational envelope in the Western Passage to an active infrastructure footprint of 27.1 acres.
"The company also told FERC that the 'total proposed project operational capacity has been scaled down to a maximum of 15 MW (megawatts) to align with revised commercial modeling,' compared to an earlier proposal that envisioned up to 51 MW. In the revised Phase I, DeepGreen projects installing 16 marine hydrokinetic turbines, increasing to 34 in Phase II. The original proposal called for 170 turbines.
"The permit application for the Alaska project received a similar letter of deficiencies from FERC, but the company has not indicated that the Alaska proposal is being scaled down."

I have to say that I'm a bit surprised (okay, a lot surprised!) that the Gnu Project is actually considering a pro-AI policy. This is one project that I would have thought that AI would have been off the table, no questions asked. Thankfully, there are some Gnu developers who are willing, able, and very ready to start forking projects if the vote goes very wrong.

Debian is obviously a rock-solid choice for CERN. With their massive software ecosystem and community, it makes total sense why they went that route. But part of me can't help but wonder what a NetBSD-powered Large Hadron Collider would look like! ⚛️
NetBSD’s hardware portability just seems like a perfect match for lab. Plus, using pkgsrc to manage complex scientific software seamlessly across all those different niche architectures would be incredible to see at that scale.
Nothing but respect for the Debian rollout, but a sysadmin can dream! 🚩🚀

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."
@leigh there absolutely is a secret cabal of anti-corporate anti-LLM developers out there. @whitequark is one of them, leading the ChiPass project which is a fork of KeePassXC; the hashtag #neverslop is emerging as a stronger, anti-corporate version of #noai though it's currently dominated by (technology adjacent) artists.
start looking there and expand your follows / search outward.
my personal thought is that tech projects consist of a community first and the software second and healthy communities will reject AI anyway. so become part of the community of the tools you want to use, and try to help them be (or become) healthy communities.
A paper that found that AI-generated art has a positive impact on cultural identity and the sustainability of cultural heritage has been retracted because (take a guess...) it was written by AI.

About the LLM/AI and open source.
And choices in life.
I tested a Gentoo Linux installation and got stuck at the Grub part and I bailed out for now. DId an OpenBSD installation which went fine. Getting disk encryption to work was easy during installation, unlike a few years ago. Did a NetBSD installation and that didn't go too well but later I found out I missed a step in the installation. A new installation went fine. Then there's ChimeraLinux which I liked when I tried it a long time ago. And I like Haiku though as long as it is a single user (root) OS it is not ready for everything.

I do like the idea of what someone wrote on Mastodon last week : Run a minimal NetBSD installation on the desktop and then keep an off-line version of an old stable Debian handy on another computer.
Now that the USA has destroyed my blog (formely at A/I/NoBlogs) maybe I should get a new blog to write down these things. After all Mastodon is not for blogging or is it ? 😇

I think we tread a dangerous path when in FOSS we ignore users concerns.
If we don't factor in users feelings, why are we sharing our software?
Why do we suddenly feel put on when folks who build their tech stack around your software get upset? Especially about LLMs?
Word of mouth built a part of your popularity in the places you never see.
I thought there was a social contract with our wider communities. I'm a bit sad that apparently we don't.
https://dotart.blog/cobbles/move-fast-and-break-infrastructure
Creepy as fuck. But nice Wile reference you got there!
It occurs to me that the reason people love to use "AI" is because they don't want to/don't know how to deal with mental friction.
It's work to sort out what you believe when faced with conflicting information. So much simpler if the universe just gives you the solution, right? Why spend a moment of your life wrestling with cognitive dissonance when the spicy autocorrect generator can tell you what to think.
But isn't the friction the point? Isn't sorting through opposing points of view & data the way we form our understanding of the world & ourselves? Isn't considering how odd shaped thoughts might fit together how creativity happens?
There is a saying I learned as a PT student studying anatomy: form follows function. Bones and muscles that are used are remodeled to be better at that purpose. Cease using them & atrophy is the result.
Our minds also follow this rule. Remove all need to actively think and lose the ability to think.
I won't use "AI"-- at all. Not for simple web searches, not to research or write my novels. Because how you form the question & how you analyze the answer in light of everything else you believe is the point.
Another analogy: you can't stop or change direction if you're driving on a road with no friction. You'll just eventually crash.
For all Fediverse people using #Linux and starting to move to #NetBSD did you notice that NetBSD has rsync as package with a version number which is quite new and thus made with Tridge + Claude A.I.
Which rsync alternative or which rsync version are you using ? Or did you move to something else ?

“Don't even get me started about how expensive it would be from a compute and capital perspective to train new generations of models on cross-sectional images with >GB files sizes, cross reference those models with the underlying clinical data, gain regulatory approval for mass access to imaging data, and the inevitability of model drift as new generations of imaging hardware and procedures continue to roll out.
