Despite massive investments and widespread hype around artificial intelligence, the technology has delivered zero financial payoff to corporate America outside of tech. Revenue per worker is rising for the Mag 7 but is flat for the S&P 493, see the first chart below. Profit margins are rising for the Mag 7 but are flat for the S&P 493, see the second chart below. And there are still no signs of AI boosting productivity growth, see the third chart below. With no impact on the bottom line, mainstream corporate America is pulling back and starting to view token spending not as a source of growth but as a cost center that weighs on margins.
VC-backed companies are spending more and more on tokens, but mainstream corporate America does not need the latest model and is unwilling to pay for it. As long as agentic AI and token spending are confined to a small part of the economy, the macroeconomic effects of AI will be very limited, see the fourth and fifth charts below.
The question looking ahead is whether, even as models become commoditized, mainstream corporate America can turn increasingly cheap intelligence into higher revenue growth and higher profit margins. That may be harder than it sounds. AI may be a great calculator, but in business, intelligence is mostly judgment. Judgment depends on context, and the answer varies with which human or which model you ask. Perhaps most importantly, AI does not understand accountability, trust, culture, unwritten rules, ethical trade-offs or fairness, all of which shape reputational risk and ultimately drive revenue growth and profit margins.
The bottom line is that the AI story will be decided in the S&P 493, not the Mag 7, and so far, there is no evidence that revenue growth or margins are improving outside the tech sector.

I offered reams of evidence in May, in what I think painted a remarkable and unmissable picture of an administration built to profit from the presidency. My first piece covered the first 15 months of Trump’s second administration; as astonishing as it was seeing it all together, even as the person who wrote it, the excesses of the five months since are almost unfathomable.

I’m certain of this because a ceaseless barrage of stories has flowed in every week since I began tracking the administration last January. Don’t believe me? Consider just 10 stories that have broken in the last three weeks, since I finished the first draft of this piece:
1. In March, 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a Truth Social post, billions of dollars of trades were placed betting oil prices would fall. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission began to investigate insider trading — then Bloomberg reported last week that a senior adviser to the agency’s Trump-appointed chairman told them to back off.
2. The Washington Post obtained a list of donors to Trump’s ballroom project, which included previously undisclosed contributors who have benefited from regulatory decisions, government contracts, and even a pardon for one donor’s family member.
3. Public Citizen, a consumer advocacy nonprofit, reported that companies who benefit from cancellation of federal enforcement actions have given or pledged $210.5 million in contributions to MAGA Inc. and other Trump-aligned super PACs.
4. Steve Witkoff and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner have been attempting to negotiate a deal to end the war in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin pushed for the deal to be contingent on a multi-billion-dollar arrangement to sell Russian energy assets. Such a deal would benefit two Middle Eastern groups who work with Kushner or Witkoff’s family and Trump donor Todd Boehly.
5. While Bo Hines, the executive director of the White House’s crypto council, was leading the White House’s push to pass the GENIUS Act (a law providing a regulatory framework for cryptocurrency), the company Hines co-owned was also taking millions of dollars from Tether, a business that stood to benefit significantly from the GENIUS Act. After the bill passed, Tether hired Hines as its U.S. chief.

Former Trump attorney Alina Habba Mildon informed the president that one of his top advisers, former Kennedy Center leader Ric Grenell, failed to deposit a multi-million-dollar donation to the Kennedy Center that her billionaire husband had made, essentially accusing Grenell of stealing the money. Subsequent reporting suggests the money did not come from Mildon but from a bank transfer from the Democratic Republic of Congo, raising even more questions.
7. Two days later, The New York Times reported that billionaire Julio Herrera Velutini, a prominent Venezuelan businessman previously charged with bribery, promised Mildon $50 million to help him secure a pardon. Mildon then took a job at Concord Partners, a company started by Isabela Herrera (the daughter of the man seeking the pardon) in October of 2025. The company had no public profile at the time of the offer, and Mildon was still serving as U.S. attorney for New Jersey when she took the “job.” Trump pardoned Velutini in January.
8. Katie Wiles, the daughter of White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, was reported to be working for a lobbying firm that represents Republika Srpska, a small, semi-autonomous territory in Bosnia and Herzegovina that is aligned with Russia.
9. Kimberly Guilfoyle, the former U.S. ambassador to Greece, was fired after The Wall Street Journal obtained text messages showing she requested $100,000 toward a credit card payment from a Trump donor in exchange for a promise she’d get the administration to make the donor’s tax and legal issues disappear. In the leaked texts, Guilfoyle stresses the importance of not leaving a paper trail of their discussions.
10. Kalshi launched an investigation into suspicious trades on their platform about whom Trump would pick as his press secretary. The platform said a series of trades accurately bet on Katie Zacharia, including two who bet around 1:41 PM ET, right before several news organizations reported Zacharia was the pick.
Again: These stories are all from the last three weeks, just in the month of October. Each one would be the kind of political bombshell that could reshape an administration in a different era, and each one surfaced after I thought I had finished collecting the stories that would comprise this article.

The reforms are not complicated. Ban the predatory fundraising vendors whose business model depends on deceiving elderly donors (again, they deny this). End the commission model for media buying in favor of flat fees, so that the people placing the ads don’t have a financial stake in placing more of them. Set pricing rules for qualified vendors that serve the party’s interests, not the consultants’. Negotiate standard rates with vetted vendors, publish what they charge and metrics on their past performance so campaigns can compare, and cap fees and markups. Furthermore, implement strict conflict-of-interest rules that prevent consultants from holding positions of power in the party infrastructure or engaging in strategic decisions from which they stand to profit.
All this can be accomplished through internal party rules. It would require no legislation or constitutional amendment, nor any Republican buy-in. But reform will be an uphill battle. The moment these reforms are proposed, the consultant class will cry foul. They will call any reform unilateral disarmament against Republicans. But what’s really happening is that Democrats are buying defective weapons at a markup and being told by the arms dealers that they won’t survive without them. The party simultaneously overvalues money and, thanks to consultant class incentives, spends it inefficiently. Reform would allow campaigns to raise and spend—on traditional and social media, organizers, or whatever else—to cultivate supporters’ energy and trust, not liquidate them.
None of this should be controversial. Financial advisers are legally required to act in their clients’ best interests. Doctors cannot take payments from drug companies for prescribing their products. Lawyers face disbarment for self-dealing. In virtually every profession where someone is trusted to act on another’s behalf, there are rules preventing the advisers from enriching themselves at the client’s expense. The glaring exception is political consultants, who operate without such obligation. They are among the last trusted advisers in American public life, and the party they advise is paying the price. The Democratic Party does not need to reinvent the wheel; it just needs to hold its vendors to the same basic standard that governs every financial adviser, doctor, and attorney in the country.

At the federal courthouse in downtown Los Angeles late Monday, several green card holders arrested in a crackdown on alleged California voter fraud expressed confusion over the charges — with some saying they had no recollection of registering to vote, as Trump administration officials accuse them of doing.
Among them was Ana Domínguez, 60, a native of El Salvador living in Long Beach as a lawful permanent resident. Federal authorities accused her Monday of fraudulently registering to vote in July 2006 and then lying about it in her naturalization paperwork in March 2026.
Domínguez said she did not have any memory of registering to vote….
Another man accused of the same crimes as Domínguez said the same: He wasn’t aware of ever registering to vote, as federal prosecutors claimed he had.
Both were among the 28 people charged with federal election-related crimes Monday
