    Replying to @BrianFeroldi and @GRDecter
The danger is not in letting students use tools like ChatGPT. It is in letting them learn that they don’t have to think, or believing that the tools are smarter than they are.

Now tools that create plausible yet dubious content are ubiquitous, good judgement and critical thinking are more important than ever. I’d like to see teachers help students critique AI-written essays. Find errors, describe what is incorrect or what you would write differently.

One of the greatest advances in software engineering over the past 20 years was moving things to open source and GitHub workflows. It will soon be a giant advance for mathematics too.

OpenAI's greatest contribution to mathematics was to move the discipline out of the journals and onto git

This might be a good day to re-post this. This is a chaotic time for mathematics. It will be hard for many people in the traditional academic system to adapt. It is the time to treat everyone who has devoted significant parts of their lives to doing math by hand with compassion

Three math predictions: 1. This year, a whole slice of “low hanging” unsolved mathematical problems will fall to agents. 2. Just as with software engineering, we will see over-confident declarations that AI is smarter than human mathematicians and that the role of mathematician

It has been a delight to see our work on square packing geometry trigger such excitement and interest among millions (!!) of people over the past day. I see many people with opinions that the solution (or perhaps the question) is “ugly.” I look at it quite differently. I think

i'm consistently surprised this square packing stuff elicits such a strong reaction among non-mathematicians. to me this falls under "ask ugly questions, get ugly answers." there's an art to asking good questions and there's nothing particularly natural about square packing

The optimality of the packing for 11 squares has been formalized in lean thanks to Astra and Claude! Huge thanks to @ojoshe, @kleddamag, @wand_125, @guzhou0806, and @ctjlewis for aiding in the process. Image credit: jlevy.github.io/squares/cases/… 1/n
