Researchers address the settlement of Hawai‘i and Rapa Nui—by way of the Mangareva Islands—and the resulting concentration of certain alleles in those populations. The hourglass shape of the seamount and volcano represents this genetic bottleneck, and the stars compose the constellation Scorpio, which voyagers recognized as Mānaiakalani or Māui’s hook. The background emulates the art form of hand-stamped bark cloth, known as kapa in Hawai‘i.
