The Ecology of Disadvantage
A Critical Analysis of Risk in Jamaican Children’s Early Education Years
by Zoyah Kinkead-Clark

The Ecology of Disadvantage explores how Jamaica’s early childhood development is shaped by the stability of children’s environments. Though the early years are optimal for growth, they are also when biological and psychosocial risks, such as poor maternal health, poverty, violence, neglect and inadequate parenting, can derail development. Grounded in Urie Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, the book underscores the need for stability across home, school and community. Resilience, it argues, cannot be assumed but must be actively nurtured through supportive families, responsive schools, trained teachers, accessible interventions and strong social services.

When and Where She Enters
The Poetics of Afro-Feminist Consciousness and Empowerment in the First Three Novels of Ecuador’s Luz Argentina Chiriboga
by Ingrid F. Watson-Miller

When and Where She Enters examines the ground-breaking literary contributions of Luz Argentina Chiriboga, the first published Afro-Ecuadorian female novelist, whose fiction offers a powerful lens into the lives of Black women in Ecuador. By analysing Tambores bajo mi piel (1991), Jonatás y Manuela (1992) and En la noche de viernes (1997), it explores how Chiriboga’s protagonists navigate issues of race, gender, class and identity while striving toward self-awareness and empowerment.
