TIL Djot

Published

While reading “Why I still blog after 15 years” I came across the section mentioning writing blog content in Djot instead of Markdown and I was instantly intrigued. There was a Hacker News thread back in late 2022 that I clearly missed.

The main selling point, for me, is that 1) John MacFarlane (JGM) is behind it (same person behind CommonMark and Pandoc) and 2) it’s a more strict Markdown syntax with more features.

The homepage is located at djot.net. JGM wrote an essay called “Beyond Markdown” which goes into detail on specific pain points & shortcomings with respect to parsing Markdown and the available features it has. I really appreciate the [Djot] cheatsheet for Markdown users document.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to write this post itself in Djot (which uses the epic .dj extension) but I’m hoping to get a feature request filed to get native support within Blot. Technically, I could have gone the .dj → .md route but honestly I don’t want an intermediate step in my authored documents.

Anyone else wanna DJ?

I love hearing from readers so please feel free to reach out.
