Everything you need out in the field.

The map

The bird you have never seen might be sitting two streets away right now. On the map you see it as soon as someone logs it.

fink is available for iPhone and Android. Get it now

See what is happening right now.

Somewhere, right now, something is happening. A pin appears, then another. You see live what others near you are finding, in Hamburg, on Helgoland or on holiday in Tenerife.

You are not the only one looking up.

Follow friends, join guilds and see what others are finding right now. And when someone near you logs something rare, you are the first to know.

Wait, what was that?

One photo or a few answers about size, colour and behaviour, and you have your bird. Every time, you know one more.

Every species you have ever seen.

From the blackbird in the garden to the bee-eater on holiday: your atlas grows with every sighting. You see what you are still missing, and whatever you logged elsewhere in the past comes along in one go.

Europe's best bird photographers are already here.

Your photo is more than proof. It becomes the picture thousands of birders see when they look up a species, with your name on it. Plus photo challenges, and several times a year the big contest with a jury, a final and real prizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

fink is the app for birdwatching and bird photography, for iPhone and Android. You see on the live map which birds are around you right now, log your own sightings and every species you see lands in your atlas. Friends, guilds and photo contests turn it into a community.
No. You see a bird, tap the plus and pick the species from the list. If you do not know it, fink identifies it from a photo or a few questions. Every sighting, you know one bird more.
No. Our goal is to make birdwatching accessible to everyone, with no hurdles and no prior knowledge. fink is built for beginners, experienced birders and photographers. Europe's best bird photographers are already here: their pictures are in the wiki, several times a year there is a photo contest with a jury and a community final, and a place on our channels if they want one.
Live means now. When someone logs a bird, it appears on the map immediately and you can assume it is still there. Others confirm on site whether it is still around. Once it is gone, it disappears from the map again. fink shows you where something is right now, not where something used to be. Locations of rare and protected species are blurred automatically.
FinkDetector tells you which bird you saw. You upload a photo or answer a few quick questions about size, colour and behaviour. It suggests the most likely species, tells you how confident it is, and from a photo it also tells whether it was a male, a female or a juvenile.
Yes, in beta. Selected users are currently testing our sound identification, specialised in the birds of Europe and Germany. Calls and songs to listen to are on the way.
Yes. Over 900 species from Europe, plus around 10,000 further species from every continent under “From all over the world”. So you fill your atlas on holiday and while travelling too.
Rare species need a proof photo until your trust level reaches the top tier. Photo, location and time are checked for plausibility. The community can confirm or question sightings. We detect faked locations and AI photos. Cheaters are out of the contest and, if it happens again, out of the app. Every suspension is decided by a human.
Yes. You upload your export from eBird or ornitho in the app, pick the years and everything lands in your atlas, your logbook and on your globe. Even the sightings from twenty years ago.
Every account gets 30 days of full access. After that Standard costs €3.99 per month or €34.99 per year. Pro costs €6.99 per month or €64.99 per year. Standard is the whole app. Pro adds your own guilds, other birders' globes, more than 8 guilds, favourite birds on your profile, the list of your profile visitors and the Pro badge.
The subscription runs through the App Store or Google Play and is cancelled there as well. Deleting your account does not end the subscription.
Each of these apps has its strength: ornitho as the reporting platform for science, eBird as the checklist database, Merlin for identification. What was missing is the shared experience on top, in an app that does not feel like 2010: live map, community, your atlas. And your old sightings come along with you.
Your data is stored on servers in Frankfurt and is never sold. We show no ads. Your photos remain yours. They appear on our social media channels only with your consent. Locations of rare species are blurred automatically.
The bird atlas works offline. Live map, community and identification need an internet connection. Wherever possible, we add further offline features.
fink is built by finklab GmbH, based on Helgoland, one of the most significant birdwatching locations in Europe. The name comes from Halunder, the language of Helgoland: “fink” simply means bird.
