VF X LETTERBOXD: MOVIE OF THE WEEK
Alejandro González Iñárritu’s new film is the most interesting movie Cruise has made in 15 years—but it might not spark the renaissance Cruise seems to hope it will. Below, check out VF’s favorite Letterboxd reviews from Digger.

Watched Oct 1, 2026Wild theatrical performances, wild filmmaking, I don’t understand why are cinephiles so divided over it. In the times where most films look and feel the same , talk about the most expected things , what must a great filmmaker do if not indulge . Love the indulgence , love the theatrics (almost like how I’ve seen Rajat Kapoor and Atul Kumar approach Shakespeare on stage ) loved Cruise and Goodman, a restrained Riz felt not in sync with the rest but caught up with them in the drunk scene( need of the character maybe ) , but spoilers aside .. a total riot . Especially that long monologue that seemed like a one take (peak cruise), powerful dialogue writing . Satire or comedy or the truth about the world to come and the chest thumping powerful idiots filmed like cut outs from South Park . Loved loved loved it. Still thinking about it while the next film is playing .

Watched Sep 30, 2026Crazy times call for crazy movies.Crazy times call for disaster movies that stop focusing solely on the catastrophe itself, and how we might somehow escape it, and start addressing just how screwed we really are.Crazy times call for movies that stop dwelling on our bad luck in getting caught up in the mess and start calling out the people who led us into it for being absolute garbage.Crazy times call for movies that shatter the mold of a cinema often incapable of saying anything meaningful, films that rattle critics who have become immune to provocation.Digger is an over the top film, at times even flawed, but I believe it's also a necessary one. Plus, it's visually stunning, which certainly doesn’t hurt.We are living in crazy times, Digger is the right movie for them.

Watched Oct 3, 2026“you’re both right. you’re all right. now what?”art won’t save the world. but it’s probably too late for anything to pull the world out of this mess partially of our own making, yet one also massively worsened by thousands of moronic men who’ve spent generations growing their wealth at its expense and who remain fundamentally impossible to oppose. we’ve glued ourselves to the seats on an unstoppable train they own and operate that’s slowly but surely hurtling off a cliff. so how do we bide our time on the way there?we find ways to laugh so as not to cry. we keep creating in spite of all the decay and destruction around us every single day because only when we stop have we truly lost. is it all just a distraction? absolutely! but what the fuck else is there for us to do? even if incremental change is still possible, trying to rewrite a tragedy that’s been in the works since well before we were born is a fool’s errand. so ultimately, all we have left to find comfort and catharsis in are these distractions - and ideally those shared in crowded rooms with countless strangers equally enraged. as someone once close to cruise said, we come to these places to laugh, to cry, and to care, because we need that - all of us. it’s one of the only things they can’t take.when we were walking out last night my boyfriend said “it’s over, but it’s alright.” because it has to be. and we have to find ways to make it so. and that’s the best we can do these days. the ice we skate is getting pretty thin, but the water’s getting warm so you might as well swim.

Watched Oct 2, 2026It’s hard to know whether you’re even supposed to LIKE Digger, which is at war with its own existence. What came through for me was the struggle to make art that actually moves people towards… anything impactful. Iñarritu seems entirely cynical about what storytelling can do in the face of impending catastrophe. What can be said that hasn’t been said already? How can he reconcile the audience’s desire to be entertained, the passive nature of consumption, and his hubris in thinking he is part of the answer?Digger is about the messiness and chaos in that pursuit. It indulges in crude, rudimentary satire as much as it reviles itself for doing it. It monologues maddeningly to the point of incoherence. It hates itself for getting Tom Cruise to jump around like a clown as much as it wants to dazzle you. I didn’t find this pointless. It made me reflect on what I as a consumer of stories want from them in the first place, and I felt like I watched an artist wrestle with that honestly.A critical question in Digger is, where is it pointing fingers? If it points fingers at powerful people, is that actually comforting for the audience? Does that enable us to continue doing nothing? If it points at us, how capable are we really at making personal and cultural change? It illuminates how climate inaction wins over action, and how there’s no clear way we’re going to break that cycle. The movie doesn’t have the answers, because if it did, we wouldn’t be in this mess. And sure, it IS on powerful people do fucking do something. But the way the world is set up, we can’t make them. Nothing this work of art of any other says or does will change that. So instead, Digger shows us how we’re being pacified, yells at us that it’s doing it this very thing to you right now, and lets you sit in the dread of all of it

Watched Oct 2, 2026Iñárritu just loves his rants about the current state of our world and also scream F U to everyone watching this! I was completely lost in what was being said here until a specific monologue that Tom Cruise absolutely kills. It felt so good seeing practical effects. I also know this film will be really divisive and I just hope that people give it a chance.
